“And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, come hither, I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters. With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”—Revelation 17:1-2
In the revelation of saint John in the above quoted scripture, the word of God says, one of the angels that had the seven vials of God’s wrath, which I discussed in detail in my last message on The Wrath of God’s judgment, told John to come so he would show him the judgment of the great whore that sits upon many waters. With whom the kings or the leaders of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
So in this message, we will be analyzing the scriptures to find out who this whore is, then after that we will go further to discuss about her eternal judgment.
Who Is The Great Whore?
As we set out to understand who the whore is, we will first of all, explore the features of this whore, before making a final conclusion of whom the whore is. Continuing from where we stopped in our opening theme text—Revelation 17—from verse 3-6, the word of God says;
“So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication; And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration”
In the above quoted text, a detailed symbol of the great whore was revealed to saint John. Now before going into the details of the beast carrying the woman, the seven heads and the ten horns on the beasts heads, let’s delve into the analysis of the name written upon her forehead and the fact that she is drunken with the blood of the saints and the martyrs of Jesus. So we can quickly get a closer understanding of what this woman represents.
The Woman’s Name Analyzed
- MYSTERY: The woman’s name begins with “Mystery”. Which means she is a mystical entity or figure. And as such, will only require the light of the Holy Spirit to discover who she really is. To the ordinary man, she is mysterious, but for us believers, we can understand who she is by the light of God’s word through the revelation of the Spirit.
- BABYLON THE GREAT: This means the woman is analogous or a perfect type of the old city of Babylon that was overthrown and taken over by the Persians. And if we read the prophecy of Isaiah in Isaiah 47, we can see that this woman is the same as the daughter of Babylon and the daughter of the Chaldeans prophesied about by the prophet Isaiah.
- THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS: Harlotry here in her name stands for spiritual harlotry or idolatry. Which is, false religions or occults. And this false religious systems are masterminded by this woman. All through scriptures, especially in the Old Testament prophecies, harlotry, fornication and adultery, mainly connotes idolatry or worship of other gods apart from the one and only true God. A very good example of this is the case of Aholah and Aholibah prophesied about by Ezekiel in the book of Ezekiel 23:1-49
- MOTHER OF ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARH: This woman, the whore, is the origin and master-minder of all the abominations of the whole world. Some of these abominations include: same sex marriage (homosexuality), transgender, bestiality, incest, etc.
- SHE IS DRUNKEN WITH THE BLOOD OF THE SAINTS AND MARTYRS OF JESUS: Which means this woman is the major entity behind the murder of believers in Christ Jesus. So she is an anti-christ agent. The fact that this woman is an anti-christ agent, can be further buttressed by the angel’s explanation of the beast which the woman sits on…
In Revelation 17:8-14, in summary, the angel explains to John that the scarlet coloured beast that carries the woman, is the anti-christ, the man of sin, which is also revealed in Revelation 13:1-8 and 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4. He says the beast was in existence, then he ceased from existence, but he will resurface again and ultimately walk his way to eternal destruction.
The Seven Heads And Ten Horns of The Beast
In Revelation 17:9-14, the Bible says, the seven heads of the scarlet coloured beast that carries the great whore, represents seven mountains which the woman sits on. The word translated as mountain here is also translated in the New Testament as ‘hill’. And it means the seven regions where the woman has her root of influence on, from where she influences the entire world. The angel also says the seven heads also represents seven kings or political leaders out of which five are fallen or dead and one was still in existence at the time of John’s revelation. And one of them was yet to emerge.
The angel goes further to say that the beast or anti-christ himself is the eighth king or leader and he is in alliance with the seven political leaders. Then he reiterates the fact that the beast is headed for eternal destruction.
Then the ten horns, the angel says, represents ten kings or political leaders, who are yet to receive any kingdom, but they will eventually receive authority as kings or leaders for one hour with the beast. That is, their reign with the beast, the anti-christ, will be very short, before the wrath of God will be unleashed on them and their subjects.
But before the eternal destruction of the beast along with these ten political leaders, they will first of all wage war with Jesus and his saints. And that war is the war of Armageddon, which we will study in a subsequent message. In the second part of this message, we will be discussing about the many waters on which the whore sits, draw a final conclusion of what the whore represents and how God will judge her with utter destruction.
