“Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses” 1Timothy 6:12
In the above opening text, the Holy Spirit through Paul the Apostle, commits a huge responsibility to every believer. He says we should fight the good fight of faith and lay hold on eternal life. Which means in order to lay hold on eternal life, the believer needs to continually fight and win the good fight of faith.
Many believers already know and quote the opening text, but they really don’t have a good understanding of how to really fight this good fight of faith. At best, when they talk about fighting the good fight of faith, they only end up praying against the devil and his agents.
But fighting the good fight of faith goes beyond praying against the devil and his agents. In this post, I will be sharing with you what it really means to scripturally fight the good fight of faith.
How To Fight The Good Fight of Faith
Yes, praying, confessing and worshipping God as a lifestyle are indeed major part of fighting the good fight of faith. But beyond that, the good fight of faith means, standing on the truth of God’s word against contrary or opposing situations of life.
Fighting the good fight of faith means; not walking by sight but by faith. It means not moving or acting by the things which are seen, but by the things which are not seen (2 Corinthians 4:18). You see, the major failure of many a Christian, come as a result of moving or acting by what they see, feel or hear…
That is, moving or acting by physical senses. And it is this acting by physical senses or prevailing physical circumstances that the word of God calls walking by sight or in the flesh. Then the good fight of faith on the other good hand is standing and acting on the revealed truth of God’s word against any opposing physical feeling, perception or prevailing circumstances.
For better understanding I’m going to be citing a practical example of how to fight the good fight of faith.
Fighting Against the Temptation to Sin by Faith
The major battle the Christian believer face more often in life, is the temptation to sin against God through the lust of the flesh, eyes, and the pride of life. When a believer is confronted with the temptation to sin through the feeling of lust in the flesh, eyes or pride, he is to fight against the temptation by standing on the truth of God’s word concerning his righteousness in Christ Jesus.
He is to instantly remember and meditate on the fact that he has already received abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness (Romans 5: 17). He is to remember and meditate on the truth that the word of God says “sin shall not have dominion over him because he is not under the law, but under grace” (Romans 6:14).
He is also to remember and meditate on the fact that he is to keep his body under and bring it into subjection, by the grace of God on his life (1Corinthians 9:27).
As the believer consciously shifts his mind and focus from the lustful feeling to meditation and confession of the above truth of God’s word, before long, he receives the divine strength to stand on those truths and overcome the temptation.
That is a perfect way to fight the good fight of faith and come out victorious every time. The same step stated above for fighting against the temptation to sin, can also be applied to fighting against sicknesses and diseases. It can be applied in fighting against poverty. In short, it can be applied in fighting against every opposition of life, satan and his agents, and coming out victorious every time, by the grace of God at work in the life of every believer.
Conclusion: The battles of life against the believer are very real. Every believer in Christ Jesus, so long as he remains on this earth, must consistently face oppositions or battles against his faith. But as the believer steadfastly takes his stand in the light of God’s word against the oppositions, he is guaranteed the victory at all time. The Lord never promised a challenge or battle free life, but he does promise us the victory at all time (See John 16:33).
